Osteoporosis :: Keeping bones healthy and strong – osteoporosis in women

Osteoporosis is much more common in women than in men. This is because women have less bone mass than men, tend to live longer and take in less calcium, and need the female hormone estrogen to keep their bones strong. If men live long enough, they are also at risk of getting osteoporosis later in life.

Diet :: Eating habits among children

A healthy diet is very important for the development of good health during the early years of life. A faulty lifestyle and especially faulty food can lead to an unhealthy adult and therefore an unhealthy society and nation.

Crohn’s Disease :: Vitamin D high in Crohn’s disease patients

Contrary to expectations, people with the inflammatory bowel condition Crohn’s disease are likely to have excessive levels of the active form of vitamin D in their blood, researchers have found. This is associated with low bone mineral density, they report.

Colorectal Cancer :: Vitamin D reduces risk of colorectal cancer

Men at high risk for colorectal cancer should increase their intake of vitamin D and fibre. US researchers report in Journal of the American Medical Association that a daily supplement of the “sunshine” vitamin and four grams of fibre a day was associated with a reduced risk of colon polyps or pre-cancerous tumours.

Health :: Sunshine is good medicine

Dr. Michael F. Holick, a professor of medicine, dermatology, physiology and biophysics at the Boston University School of Medicine, who discovered the active form of vitamin D, has pulled together an impressive body of evidence in support of his advice that no one should be, as he puts it, a “sunphobe” or, for that matter, a sun worshipper.

Vitamin D :: Vitamin D can reduce elders’ fractures

Vitamin D supplements can prevent fractures in men and women aged over 65 years, according to a new study in British Medical Journal (BMJ). Researchers identified 2,686 people (2,037 men and 649 women) aged between 65 to 85 years living in the community.
