Nutrition :: Major Initiatives for Dietary Supplements

The Food and Drug Administration announced three major regulatory initiatives designed to further implement the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA). These initiatives — a regulatory strategy, an open public meeting, and a draft guidance document for industry — are significant steps FDA has taken in the implementation of DSHEA.

Lifestyle :: Surroundings can encourage active Lifestyles

A new $2.8 million effort, partnering public and private funding agencies, will examine how better community design encourages people to be more physically active in their daily lives. Researchers will identify how our built environment contributes to obesity and how environmental changes can combat a growing public health problem.

To probe the complexities of living systems, the National
Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), part of the
National Institutes of Health (NIH), has established its
fifth Center of Excellence in Complex Biomedical Systems
Research. The new center, headed by David Botstein, Ph.D.,
at Princeton University in Princeton, N.J., will explore
how biological molecules interact with each other and their
environment to create dynamic systems.

HIV :: United States discriminates against HIV+ people

While nearly a million HIV+ American citizens enjoy the freedom to leave and travel outside their country, the United States government prohibits HIV+ individuals from other countries entry to the United States! Without a doubt, this ban is the most blatant display of discrimination against HIV+ people to date! This ban continues to fuel discrimination, while a worldwide community strives to stop the stigma and discrimination surrounding HIV and AIDS!
