Diabetes :: Patient Support Program Offers Savings on Glumetza Therapy for Type 2 Diabetes

King Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NYSE: KG) and Depomed, Inc. (NASDAQ: DEPO) today announced the launch of a new program that will provide support for patients with diabetes who are receiving treatment with Glumetza (metformin hydrochloride extended-release tablets), a new once-daily extended-release metformin formulation that features AcuForm drug-delivery technology.

?Patients with type 2 diabetes are often using multiple medications to control their blood glucose as well as to manage the co-morbidities associated with diabetes, like high blood pressure and high cholesterol,? said Brian A. Markison, president and chief executive officer of King Pharmaceuticals. ?We recognize the challenges patients face and have developed the Glumetza? patient support program to help them keep costs manageable while providing access to the medications they need.?

The patient support program is comprised of two components. Patients who participate in the Glumetza? Patient Loyalty Card program will receive an immediate discount of up to $20 off their required co-pay for a supply of Glumetza? therapy. The easy-to-use loyalty card works like a debit card that patients can present at the pharmacy to receive their discount, and is redeemable for up to six months of Glumetza? therapy.

In addition to the loyalty card program, a separate voucher program will provide patients with a supply of 35 Glumetza? 500 mg extended-release tablets at no cost. Patients must present the voucher prescription at the pharmacy to receive the free supply, and the pharmacy is then reimbursed by King and Depomed for the cost of the tablets.

?With the Glumetza? patient support program, we?re helping to ensure that all patients have access to the benefits of our AcuForm technology, which offers convenient once-daily dosing and high tolerability,? said John W. Fara, Ph.D., chairman, president and chief executive officer of Depomed.

Both the voucher and the loyalty card are provided to patients by their physicians at no cost. Patients interested in the programs should speak to their physicians.
