Control and containment measures were initiated after confirmation of Avian Influenza by the Government of India.
A high level meeting of concerned Departments, agencies and local representatives was chaired by the Chief Minister of Manipur (Shri O. Ibobi Singh) on 25th July, 2007 itself in order to determine the strategy for control and containment.
The mobilization and deployment plan was determined by the Animal Husbandry Department. The infected and surveillance zones were identified.
The Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) have been mobilized. Initially, 20 RRTs will start the operations. Culling was started on 26th July, 2007 after medical examination and briefing of the members of the RRTs by Health and Animal Husbandry officials. Poultry will be killed in a radius of 0 to 5 Kms. As per the initial details provided by the State Government, nearly 1,50,000 birds are likely to be killed in the operations. More than 75,000 of the poultry is backyard.
About 128 small units of poultry are likely to be covered in the operations. The approximate population of ducks in the 5 kms. radius is 28,000. Culling will be undertaken in 8 villages surrounding the area of infection on the first day.
