Scientists in Italy and the US have discovered that curries can help reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. A study of curcumin, a chemical compound found in most Indian dishes from korma to vindaloo, has revealed it can stop the onset of the brain-damaging disease.

In India, where curry is the national dish, there are much lower rates of Alzheimer’s among the elderly than in Western countries.

Curcumin, which is extracted from tumeric, has been used to treat many illnesses, from liver damage to cancer and Aids.

There is a growing need for remedies to fight the conditions associated with ageing, as elderly populations continue to expand around the globe. The number of people with dementia is steadily increasing and there are nearly 18 million people with the disease in the world. Alzheimer?s disease is the most common form of dementia, making up 55 per cent of all cases.
