Unani :: Lead found in Unani medicines

Alternative medicine products with dangerous levels of lead, mercury and arsenic may be on sale in some stores across Canada, federal regulators warn.

Though the products, which are sold as Ayurvedic medicine therapy, are not authorized for sale in Canada, officials “suspect” at least 14 may be sold here after surveys in other countries found them on the market.

A Health Canada test found one product ‘SAFI’ sold as a blood purifier and for skin diseases had 40 times the maximum amount of arsenic allowable for drugs. Canadians are warned not to use SAFI, manufactured by Hamdard (Wakf) Laboratories in India. Toxic heavy metals can damage vital organs.
