Eyes :: Receptor that enables clear corneas is identified

The cornea stays clear by expressing a soluble form of a receptor that traps factors enabling growth of vision-obstructing blood vessels, researchers say. When sflt-1, a free-floating receptor for vascular endothelial growth factor A, is eliminated, vision-obstructing blood vessels start growing, teams of researchers led by the Medical College of Georgia and University of Kentucky report in Nature. The paper was published online Oct. 18 and will be in the Oct. 26 print issue.

Health :: New mechanism found that may underlie neuropathic pain

Researchers at Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research & Development (J&JPRD) announced on 15 October 2006 that they have discovered a new molecular mechanism that may underlie neuropathic pain. The clearer understanding of the root-cause of chronic neuropathic pain, and the preclinical validation of new targets for pharmaceutical therapies shown in this research, together present an opportunity for the development of new ways to treat the severe pain associated with such common conditions or diseases as sciatica, diabetic neuropathy and shingles.

Obesity :: Manhattan pharmaceuticals – oral oleoyl-estrone clinical program to include morbidly obese

Manhattan Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Amex: MHA) today announced expansion of its oral Oleoyl-estrone (OE) clinical obesity program to include the morbidly obese. A new US Phase 2a clinical trial evaluating oral OE in morbidly obese male subjects will be initiated in October 2006. The morbidly obese population in the US is estimated to be 14 million people. OE is the Company’s orally administered product candidate in development for the treatment of obesity.

Sleep :: Australasian sleep association, Perth – conference highlights

Snorers Cause Bed Partners to have EEG Arousals (91)Sean Tolhurst, University of Queensland and SNORE Australia – A new study has found that people with sleep apnea cause their bed-partners to have EEG arousals and sleep disturbance. Up until now there has been limited scientific information into how much a patient with Obstructive Sleep Apnea disturbs a sleeping bed partner. This study investigated the impact that snoring and sleep apnea events have on the bed-partner.

Sleep Apnea :: Experts Spot New Form of Sleep Apnea

‘Complex sleep apnea’ is especially tough to treat, researchers say. Mayo Clinic researchers say they’ve identified a new type of sleep apnea called “complex sleep apnea” that may be resistant to standard treatment such as continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP).

Asthma :: Asthma tied to sleep apnea in women

Asthma appears to almost double the risk of symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea in young mothers, Ohio-based researchers report. “In a large population-based cohort of young women, we found that women with asthma are twice as likely to have symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea as compared to women without asthma,” lead investigator Dr. Maninder Kalra told.

Homeopathy :: Miracles of the infinite dose

People, generally, have been heard saying that the Homoeopathic medicines are slow acting, but the fact is contrary. Experience has shown that the infinitely small doses of the indicated Homoeopathic medicine when used singly in proper dose as explained by Hahnemann in his ?Organon? act like charm, especially in acute diseases of various kinds (it can be said that in all cases of acute diseases of various kinds). Often the results are simply astonishing. The results confirm the proposition as related by Hahnemann in Aphorism 149 of his fifth edition of Organon. Some so called Homoeopaths who use combinations or practice polypharmacy, put forward the lame excuse that everything has greatly changed since the time of Hahnemann. No doubt, lot of changes has taken place during past two centuries, since the time of Hahnemann. When Hahnemann discovered Homoeopathy, even the microscope was not used in the field of medicine, today there are very sophisticated electronic gadgets in use to locate minutest changes in the physiology and pathology of an individual. But, the laws of nature, which came into being in the beginning of life, not to say during the past two centuries, is there any change in these laws of nature?
