Polio :: World Health Organisation congratulates Ramadoss, Indian Health Minister

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has congratulated Indian Health minister Anbumani Ramadoss for receiving the Polio Champion award for leading the polio eradication campaign in India.

Observing that his personal commitment and the strong support of the government have yielded significant results, WHO Director General Margaret Chan said in a message “polio in India is now primarily restricted to a few districts in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar”.

“There has been a sharp decline in the number of type 1 polio cases in 2007,” Chan said and hoped that India would soon become polio-free.

He said WHO was ready to assist India in its efforts to deliver a perpetual gift of a polio-free world to all its children.
