Insulin :: New insulin pen with digital memory simplifies diabetes management

Diabetes management can be overwhelming, and data shows less than half of the 15 million being treated for diabetes have blood sugar levels within the recommended range.

People with diabetes who use insulin must balance meals and exercise with carefully measured doses of insulin. This is not an easy task. But now, a new cutting-edge insulin pen, HumaPen(R) MEMOIR(TM), has been launched that may help simplify the management of diabetes, and a second new insulin pen, HumaPen(R) LUXURA(TM) HD, will be launched in April.

Both MEMOIR and LUXURA HD are for use with Humalog(R), (insulin lispro injection [rDNA origin]) the most-prescribed mealtime insulin in the US. MEMOIR is the first insulin pen with memory (it tracks the date, time and amount of the past 16 insulin doses, including priming doses), which can be important for patients and doctors in developing a treatment plan. LUXURA HD will be able to deliver insulin in half-unit increments, after the first unit, and may be attractive to parents of some children with diabetes. Both pens also resemble writing pens for less noticeable injections in public.

Additionally, Eli Lilly and Company, makers of MEMOIR and LUXURA HD, sponsored a national survey of people with diabetes. Not surprisingly, two- thirds said a reusable pen that tracks the date; time and amount of insulin would find it valuable.
