Diabetes :: No more needles for people with type 2 diabetes

Daily injections could be a thing of the past for people with diabetes thanks to an innovative new product supported by the Australian government.

Australian Industry Minister, Ian Macfarlane, announced Melbourne-based Vital Health Resources would receive a $2 million Commercial Ready grant to help develop the product and take it to market.

Mr Macfarlane said the company was one of 86 innovative businesses sharing in more than $34 million through the latest round of Commercial Ready and Commercialising Emerging Technologies (COMET) grants.

“Vital Health Sciences will use its grant to produce a transdermal insulin which will deliver medication through a skin patch rather than via an injection.

?The innovation is its carrier that enhances skin penetration and has anti-inflammatory properties to prevent irritation.

?The target group is Type II diabetics who can’t control their sugar levels through oral medication.

“This is a great Australian innovation that could provide a huge relief for people requiring daily injections,” Mr Macfarlane said.
