Biovail :: Biovail Corp. follows through on major restructuring

Biovail Corporation (NYSE:BVF)(TSX:BVF) today announced that, effective immediately, Kenneth G. Howling has been promoted to Senior Vice-President, Chief Financial Officer. Charles Rowland, Biovail’s former Senior Vice-President, Chief Financial Officer has left the firm to assume a senior position with another pharmaceutical company.

Different reactions in the brain to two common allergy triggers — allergens (pollen and dust) and histamine (allergy cells within the body caused by foods, drugs or infection) — may shed some light on the itch-scratch cycle. Allergen-induced itch intensity ratings were higher compared to histamine and perception of itch and changes in blood flow were significantly greater when allergen induced. Itch intensity and changes in blood flow were perceived to exist for significantly longer periods.

Scientists at the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute and Duke University Medical Center have pinpointed a fungal gene that appears to play an important role in the development and virulence of Alternaria brassicicola, a destructive fungal pathogen that results in considerable leaf loss in many economically important crops worldwide, including canola, cabbage and broccoli.

HIV :: International HIV/AIDS trial finds risks increase on episodic antiretroviral therapy

Results from one of the largest HIV/AIDS treatment trials ever conducted show that a specific strategy of interrupting antiretroviral therapy more than doubles the risk of AIDS or death from any cause. In the study, the investigators used two predetermined levels of CD4+ T cells, the primary immune cell targeted by HIV, to guide them in respectively suspending or restarting the study participants on antiretroviral therapy.

Pilot study successful in taming allergic reactions to food

Children who were allergic to eggs were able to essentially overcome their allergy by gradually consuming increased quantities of eggs over time, researchers at Duke University Medical Center and the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences have found in a small pilot study.

An observational study of more than 64,000 asthma patients demonstrated that patients receiving treatment with Advair Diskus (fluticasone propionate and salmeterol inhalation powder) had a significant risk reduction in emergency department visits due to asthma versus patients treated with fluticasone propionate (FP) alone.
