The Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister M Veerappa Moily has said that the AADHAAR card will no longer be a must for giving subsidies on LPG. He told reporters in New Delhi yesterday that Aadhaar is only an identification card and that the government will not make it mandatory unless the Supreme Court gives a clearance.
The Apex Court in an interim order had said that the Aadhaar number cannot be made mandatory for people to avail any government service and nobody should be deprived of any such facilities for want of the card.
The Aadhaar is being used to implement the cash transfer schemes of various Ministries.
