Urinary Tract Infection :: FDA approves new drug to treat complicated urinary tract and intra-abdominal infections

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved doripenem injection, 500 mg intravenous infusion, for the treatment of complicated urinary tract and intra-abdominal infections. Doripenem injection, sold under the trade name Doribax, has been shown to be active against several strains of bacteria.

Urinary Tract Infection :: Daily antibiotics not reducing UTI risk in children

The use of prophylactic antibiotics, which involves daily administration of antibiotics to children after an initial urinary tract infection, is not associated with reduced risk of recurrent urinary tract infections, but is associated with an increased risk of resistant infections, according to a study in the July 11 issue of JAMA.

Diabetes :: Saxagliptin with metformin improves glycemic control in type 2 diabetes patients

Saxagliptin, an inhibitor of dipeptidyl-peptidase-4 (DPP-4) in development by Bristol-Myers Squibb Company (NYSE: BMY) and AstraZeneca (NYSE: AZN), in combination with metformin, exhibited a statistically significant improvement in glycemic control in subjects with Type 2 diabetes compared to metformin alone through 24 weeks of treatment.

Antibiotic :: New drug application submitted for investigational antibiotic Doripenem

Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research & Development, L.L.C., (J&JPRD) announced that it has submitted a New Drug Application (NDA) to the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for doripenem, an investigational carbapenem antibiotic for the treatment of nosocomial pneumonia, a pneumonia that is acquired in a hospital or other healthcare setting.

Grant :: $2.6M grant awarded to New York University College of Nursing

The Harford Institute for Geriatric Nursing at New York University College of Nursing, in collaboration with the American Journal of Nursing, has been awarded a $2,622,560 grant from The John A Hartford Foundation to produce and distribute demonstration videos and a companion series of journal articles for teaching nurses the use of geriatric health assessment tools. Terra Nova Films will partner with AJN to produce the videos.
