Brain :: Brain cleaner method prevent brain damage

Brain injury causes glutamate, a substance necessary for proper brain function, to flood areas surrounding the trauma and kill other cells. Weizmann Institute scientists have developed a new way to rid the brain of excess glutamate. This method — which uses an enzyme found in blood — could lead to new therapies not only for brain injury, but also for stroke and other conditions, and holds promise for prevention of damage from meningitis or nerve gas.

Stroke :: Risk of stroke expected to decrease with new screening guidelines

For the first time, a set of screening guidelines for the detection of carotid stenosis, the thickening of the blood vessel that supplies blood to the brain and a leading cause of stroke, has been developed by a multidisciplinary committee of internationally recognized neurologists and surgeons. These guidelines will help reduce the death and disability rates associated with stroke by identifying carotid stenosis in a timely manner, allowing treatment before a stroke occurs. These guidelines appear in the latest issue of Journal of Neuroimaging.

Heart :: Risk increases with combined heart and stroke prevention surgery

Patients who undergo combined heart bypass surgery and carotid endarterectomy, the most commonly used stroke prevention surgery, significantly increase their chances of death or stroke, according to a study published in the January 16, 2007, issue of Neurology?, the scientific journal of the American Academy of Neurology.

Stroke :: Fewer patients undergoing stroke prevention surgery for wrong reasons

A new study has found a drop in the number of patients undergoing the most commonly used stroke prevention surgery, carotid endarterectomy, for inappropriate reasons. Researchers are crediting the drop to highly publicized randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that clarified the appropriate use of the surgery. The researchers’ findings are published in the January 16, 2007, issue of Neurology?, the scientific journal of the American Academy of Neurology.

Gene :: Researchers first to map gene that regulates adult stem cell growth

A new discovery in stem cell research may mean big things for cancer patients in the future. After being the first to genetically map and identify a gene that regulates adult stem cells, the researchers investigated the gene’s protein product, Latexin, which can be used to ramp up the body’s stem cell count. The team’s findings are being published in Nature Genetics.
