Psychology :: Genetics influence adolescent language problems

Specific language impairment (SLI) is a condition in which a child’s language development is deficient despite showing normal development in all other areas. New research, published in Current Directions in Psychological Science, attempts to identify the cause behind this affliction.

Teen girls make better health choices with intervention program

For two consecutive years, researchers examined measures of cardiovascular fitness and self-esteem in sophomore girls attending Trenton Central High School and found students are making better health choices with an intervention program. Low Density Lipoprotein levels — the unhealthy cholesterol — also decreased significantly. WHF Teen Esteem is a gender-specific approach to teen girls’ health and wellness and is meant to be a replacement for traditional gymnastics and health classes.

Helping children resolve past conflicts may be beneficial

A study of conflict resolution in siblings suggests it is beneficial for children to resolve past disagreements even after the conflict is over. This research was conducted with sixty four pairs of siblings ages 4 to 12. The study concludes that encouraging after-the-fact resolution of differences, parents can help their children develop conflict resolution skills. The study also addressed the factors most likely to affect how conflict is resolved between siblings of different ages.

Testing Strengthens Recall Whether Something’s on the Test Or Not

Remember those kids who wanted to study only what was on the test? They may have cheated themselves. New research reveals that the simple act of taking a test helps you remember everything you learned, even if it isn?t tested. In three experiments, psychologists at Washington University in St. Louis determined that testing enhanced long-term recall for material that was not tested initially. Untested students recalled significantly less of what they?d studied ? even after having extra time to go over the material.

Psychology :: Oregon study meets highest standards in US for research on reading programs

At least one in three children in this country has difficulty learning to read. Research shows that children’s aggressive behavior and reading difficulties during early elementary school years are risk factors for adolescent problem behaviors such as delinquency, academic failure, and substance use. Oregon Research Institute scientists recently received high marks for their work to reverse this trend.
