The Assam government has decided to launch a special immunisation drive following detection of polio virus in a four-year-old child in Karimganj district.
State Health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told a press conference today that the special immunisation drive would start from the last week of this month and continue till April next to create awareness among the people about the importance of administering police vaccines.
The minister said the polio virus was mostly found among migrant labourers who were not aware of the need for polio vaccination.
He said the four-year-old child Jyotsna Dey had polio virus which was confirmed on November ten last.
The minister said the government would concentrate on border districts where migrant labourers live in large numbers.
