National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, has issued a notice to Uttar Pradesh government and sought a report on the working conditions of people in several brick kilns in Varanasi and Mirzapur.
NHRC has taken a suo moto cognizance of the pathetic condition of a number of children working along with men and women in several brick kilns on both sides of Varanasi-Mirzapur Highway on way to Chunar.
The Commission has issued notices to the District Magistrates of Varanasi and Mirzapur calling for reports on number of surprise checks or raids conducted by the District Vigilance Committees in last one year. It also sought details of total number of brick kilns operating in Varanasi and Mirzapur.
NHRC, in its notice, also asked whether all the owners have obtained license to run the brick kilns from the competent authority.
