SIDS :: Bed sharing in sudden infant death syndrome (sids) cases

In “Sleep Environment, Positional, Lifestyle and Demographic Characteristics Associated with Bed Sharing in Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Cases: A Population-based Study,” researchers found SIDS cases that involved bed sharing showed more risk factors for SIDS than non-bed sharing cases of SIDS. Risk factors include the use of a couch, the presence of another child, and a higher proportion of infants placed to sleep laterally (on their side), an unstable sleep position that can result in a shift to prone (on stomach) sleep.

Health :: Why do we stick to our bad habits?

Why do we ignore public warnings and advertisements about the dangers of smoking, drinking alcohol, overeating, stressing out and otherwise persist in habits and behaviours that we know aren’t good for us?

Obesity :: Children’s belly fat increases more than 65 percent since 1990s

Abdominal obesity increased more than 65 percent among boys and almost 70 percent among girls between 1988 and 2004. The finding of growing girth is significant because abdominal obesity has emerged as a better predictor of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes risk than the more commonly used Body Mass Index, a weight-to-height ratio that can sometimes be misleading.

Macular Degeneration :: Laser Treatment Does Not Prevent Vision Loss for People with Early Age-Related Macular Degeneration

An extensive NIH-supported study has found that low-intensity laser treatment, thought to be possibly beneficial in slowing or preventing the loss of vision from age-related macular degeneration (AMD), is ineffective in preventing complications of AMD or loss of vision. This is the major conclusion of the Complications of Age-Related Macular Degeneration Prevention Trial (CAPT), a research study of more than 1,000 people that will be published in the November 2006 issue of the journal Ophthalmology. The study was supported by grants from the National Eye Institute (NEI) of the National Institutes of Health.

Cholesterol :: Patent Victory in Spanish Court Favoring Ranbaxy on Atorvastatin Unaffected

Ranbaxy Laboratories Limited said that recently, in two separate rulings, the Spanish courts (the Mercantile Court of Barcelona, No. 2) found Spanish patent ES 2,167,306 (counterpart of Pfizer’s EP 409 281) to be invalid for lack of novelty. The two rulings made on September 26, 2006, in Lek Pharmaceuticals v. Warner Lambert Co. and in Laboratorios Cinfa et al. v. Warner Lambert, found claims 1 to 3 of Pfizer to be invalid. These decisions came after considering the views of the Spanish Patent Office (SPO), in addition to technical expert reports.

Weight Loss :: Supplements help avoid ‘Weight Creep’ from Turkey and Sugar Plums – Tonalin CLA Study

CLA may serve critical role in preventing weight and fat gain during year-end holidays and with normal aging. Avoiding ‘weight creep’ from turkey and sugar plums is the theme of a consumer PR campaign Cognis Nutrition & Health is rolling out in time for the holiday season based on a Tonalin? CLA study recently published online in the prestigious International Journal of Obesity. The research suggests that Tonalin? CLA could have long-term health benefits by preventing weight and fat gain commonly experienced by adults during the November-December holiday season, and in the normal aging process.
