Healthy :: College students less healthy than they think

Obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and inactivity: they?re not just your father?s problems any more, University of New Hampshire research finds. New data on the widely unstudied demographic of college students indicates that this group of 18 ? 24-year-olds are on the path toward chronic health diseases. Although limited, national data suggest the trend is not unique to UNH.

Rheumatoid Arthritis :: Increased alcohol intake associated with decreased risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis

New data presented today at EULAR 2007, the Annual European Congress of Rheumatology in Barcelona, Spain, suggests that alcohol may protect against rheumatoid arthritis, with three units a week exhibiting protective effects and ten units a week being more protective still. An alcohol consumption of three units per week or more also reduced the risk by smoking or by a genetic predisposition to RA.

Diabetes :: Diabetes professionals join forces to identify gaps in diabetes care and better self care

A symposium, sponsored by the American Journal of Nursing (AJN) in collaboration with the American Diabetes Association, the American Association of Diabetes Educators, Joslin Diabetes Center and the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing identified barriers to, and strategies for, more effective diabetes self management and reaffirmed the nurse’s critical role to facilitate better patient self care. These results are published in a special supplement to the June issue of AJN.
