HIV :: AIDS kills 250,000 people each month – like monthly tsunami

More people die from HIV/Aids every month than in the Indian Ocean tsunami, says Professor Robert Gallo, who helped identify the HIV/AIDS virus nearly 25 years ago, said the Asian tsunami killed an estimated 230,000 people.

Writing in the Student BMJ magazine, he said: “The future of the HIV/Aids problem takes more than medical scientists and clinicians. It necessarily involves other social and healthcare workers and support groups.” But he added: “My current thoughts lean towards optimism.”

He writes in the Student British Medical Journal (BMJ) that research must be continued into developing preventative treatments and eventually creating a cure.
