Heart Disease :: WAFACS – Folic acid, B vitamins not supported

Results of a randomized trial of folic acid and B-vitamins in secondary prevention of cardiovascular events in women did not support their use as preventive agents against cardiovascular disease in women with established vascular disease or those at high risk.

Christine M. Albert, M.D., director of the Center for Arrhythmia Prevention at Brigham and Women?s Hospital, Boston, presented these results as part of the randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled WAFACS (Women?s Antioxidant and Folic Acid Cardiovascular Study) at this news conference.

The combination did lower homocysteine levels by about 18 percent, but did not reduce the risk of total cardiovascular events among 5,442 women at high risk.
