Breast cancer :: BOADICEA computer program predicts women’s cancer risk

Scientists said they have developed a computer program that can predict whether women have a high risk of developing breast or ovarian cancer. By using detailed family history, the program called BOADICEA selects women who are most susceptible to the illness and would benefit from further screening or treatment.

Bladder cancer :: test to detect recurrence of bladder cancer

A three-year study to validate a test to detect the recurrence of bladder cancer has been initiated by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), at 12 centers* across the United States and Canada. This test was conceived and is being conducted by NCI’s Early Detection Research Network (EDRN). By examining genetic changes in DNA obtained through urine samples, the test, if successfully validated, will provide a sensitive and non- invasive method of screening for bladder cancer recurrence.

New way to control drug-resistant bacteria

Based on an improved understanding of bacteriophages – viruses that infect bacteria – scientists reporting in the Sept. 23 issue of the journal “Nature” believe they have discovered a potential new way to control drug-resistant bacteria, an increasingly worrisome public health problem.

Researchers from 12 medical centers in the United States and Canada, who have performed islet transplants in 86 patients with type 1 diabetes, published their results today in the first annual report of the Collaborative Islet Transplant Registry (CITR). The report (www.citregistry.org) analyzes many factors that can affect the outcome of this experimental procedure for people with severe or complicated type 1 diabetes.
