The Centre has asked the Assam government for information about the cataract operations performed last month at the Regional Institute of Opthalmology in Guwahati in which 38 patients lost their eyesight.
“We have asked from the Assam Government to inform us about the incident”, Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss told reporters.
The state government had instituted an enquiry which is scheduled to submit its report within the next couple of months.
The minister said 5.2 million cataract surgeries had been done last year and sometimes “anomalies occur which we have to rectify”.
The state government has come under criticism after 38 patients lost their vision after undergoing cataract operations at the institute in September.
