Obesity :: Manhattan pharmaceuticals – oral oleoyl-estrone clinical program to include morbidly obese

Manhattan Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Amex: MHA) today announced expansion of its oral Oleoyl-estrone (OE) clinical obesity program to include the morbidly obese. A new US Phase 2a clinical trial evaluating oral OE in morbidly obese male subjects will be initiated in October 2006. The morbidly obese population in the US is estimated to be 14 million people. OE is the Company’s orally administered product candidate in development for the treatment of obesity.

Obesity :: Overweight in Early Childhood Increases Chances for Obesity at Age 12

Children who are overweight as toddlers or preschoolers are more likely to be overweight or obese in early adolescence, report researchers in a collaborative study by the NIH and several academic institutions. The researchers periodically collected height and weight measurements of a sample of children, beginning at age 2 and continuing until age 12. Their analysis, appearing in the September Pediatrics, provides some of the strongest evidence to date that overweight in early childhood increase the chances for overweight in later life.

About a third of patients who took the anti-acne drug Accutane developed elevated cholesterol levels, and over 40 percent showed raised levels of blood fats called triglycerides, a new report warns.

Something like three out of every five patients with type 2 diabetes show signs of vitamin D deficiency, Italian researchers report in the medical journal Diabetes Care.

Two risk factors that place males at greater risk for heart disease than women appear to be influenced by genes on the X chromosome, report researchers at the NIH and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School.
