The Linda Lehrer Memorial Walk for Lung Cancer will be held at noon Saturday, May 19, at the Webster Thomas Field House. Webster Schroeder High School senior Allyssa Lehrer is organizing the event as a tribute to her aunt who died last fall and to fund lung cancer research at the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center.
Linda Lehrer operated a nail salon and is remembered for her sense of humor and honesty who enjoyed shopping and baking for her family gatherings. She was 56 when she died of lung cancer.
Lung cancer is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States. Each year, more than 200,000 people are diagnosed with lung cancer and 160,000 die each year from the disease, according to the American Cancer Society.
The student organizer is hoping to bring hundreds of walkers together to support local research to find cures for this deadly disease. Volunteers will collect pledges and walk the track at the school.
Registration begins at 11 a.m., followed by an update on lung cancer research and new treatment advances Wilmot Cancer Center radiation oncologist Kenneth Usuki, M.D. The 45-minute walk begins at noon.
