Constant consumption of broiler chicken increases possibility of breast cancer amongst women, a study by Goa Medical College and Hospital said.
“The study was done over the last five years and 571 women hailing from all strata of society and economic hierarchy were examined,” Goa Medical College (GMC) Pathology department head Dr R G W Pinto told PTI.
“Use of steroid injection on broiler chicken is the main reason for susceptibility to the disease,” Dr Pinto said.
“The study needs further detailing to confirm the findings,” he mentioned.
Experts, who examined the data available since 1974, found that the cases of breast cancer in the age group of 21 to 30 are increasing drastically, he said.
“On an average, we get 1,000 cancer cases a year, of which 30 per cent are of breast cancer,” he said, adding that 250 to 300 breast cancer cases are detected in the hospital annually.
On the co-relation between broiler chicken and breast cancer, he said eating hen increases hormones in the body. “This eating habit over a long period of time along with other risk factors can lead to breast cancer,” he said.
