Health :: Arkansas and Pfizer – New Partnership to Embrace Healthier Eating and Fitness

Governor Mike Huckabee of Arkansas and Pfizer Inc today announced the formation of Balance It Out: Arkansas, a new school-based community program to reduce the number of children who are overweight or at risk of becoming overweight, effectively diminishing their risk of developing chronic illness. In December 2006, the program will begin in Little Rock, AR, with a health fair for state employees designed to increase awareness of health risk factors and steps to prevent disease. Beginning in early 2007, the program will reach children and their families in the Dollarway (Pine Bluff), Harrison and Paragould school districts.

Breastfeeding :: Unlimited expressed breast milk on board airplanes

This is a petition to urge the Transportation Security Administration to consider breast milk to be a life sustaining and supporting body fluid for babies. This means that mothers would be allowed to carry pumped breast milk in the cabin of airplanes in any amount whether traveling with or without their infants.

Health :: Pharmion enrolled first patient into Vidaza Patient Registry

Pharmion Corporation (Nasdaq: PHRM) announced today the enrollment of the first patient in AVIDA(TM), a registry for patients treated with Vidaza(R) (azacitidine for injectable suspension). Vidaza was approved in May 2004 for the treatment of all five French-American-British (FAB) subtypes of myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS): refractory anemia (RA) or refractory anemia with ringed sideroblasts (RARS) if accompanied by neutropenia or thrombocytopenia or requiring transfusions; refractory anemia with excess blasts (RAEB), refractory anemia with excess blasts in transformation (RAEB-T), and chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMMoL). Myelodysplastic syndromes are a serious and life-threatening group of diseases in which the bone marrow does not function normally, resulting in the production of malformed or immature blood cells.

HIV :: Increase in HIV among injecting drug users

A report released by the Health Protection Agency shows that around one in 50 Injecting Drug Users (IDUs) in the UK are now infected with HIV. This is around twice the level seen at the beginning of the decade. In particular the HIV prevalence amongst those injecting for less than three years has increased since 2002. Increasing evidence suggests that crack cocaine is a major factor.

Imaging :: MRI Scans by Remote Control

UCLA radiologists and Siemens Medical Solutions have jointly developed remote-control software that enables an off-site imaging expert to log onto a personal computer and operate a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine by remote control. Reported in the November issue of Radiology, the study found that the quality of the remote scans were superior to onsite scans by a less experienced technologist, suggesting options for helping facilities or regions with limited medical staff and expertise.

Diabetes :: Merck KGaA & Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Collaboration on DPPIV Inhibitor for Type 2 Diabetes

Merck KGaA and Glenmark Pharmaceuticals S.A (Switzerland), a wholly owned subsidiary of Glenmark Pharmaceuticals India (GPL), have entered into an agreement for Glenmark?s DPPIV inhibitor GRC 8200, a treatment for type 2 diabetes in Phase II of clinical development. The transaction is expected to close this year upon approval of the exclusive license to GRC 8200 by the U.S. anti-trust agencies under the HSR Act.

Erectile Dysfunction :: Cialis – tadalafil for erectile dysfunction, with Eli Lilly

Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE: LLY) today announced that it has signed a definitive merger agreement to acquire ICOS Corporation (Nasdaq: ICOS), based in Bothell, Washington, in a cash transaction. Since 1998, Lilly and ICOS have been partners in Lilly ICOS LLC, the joint venture that manufactures, markets and sells Cialis?(tadalafil). Successfully launched in 2003, Cialis is an oral PDE-5 inhibitor for the treatment of erectile dysfunction that is available in more than 100 countries.

Eyes :: Bayer & Regeneron’s VEGF Trap for the treatment of eye diseases, AMD

Bayer HealthCare (NYSE: BAY) and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Nasdaq: REGN) today announced that the companies have entered into a collaboration agreement for the global development, and commercialization outside the U.S., of the VEGF Trap for the treatment of eye disease by local administration (VEGF Trap-Eye). The VEGF Trap-Eye, currently in Phase I and Phase II clinical trials, is a protein that binds to or ?traps? vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and blocks its activity. VEGF is thought to play a critical role in certain eye diseases.

Eating Disorders :: Hair reveals eating disorders – Utah’s Brigham Young University

US scientists have come up with a new way to determine whether someone is suffering from an eating disorder – examining their hair. A study released by researchers from Utah’s Brigham Young University found that examining carbon and nitrogen in the proteins of hair could reveal information about a person’s day-to-day nutrition.

Smoking :: Nabi biopharmaceuticals completes enrollment in nicvax phase iib ‘proof-of-concept’ clinical trial

Nabi Biopharmaceuticals (Nasdaq: NABI) today announced it has completed enrollment for its Phase IIB “proof-of-concept” study for NicVAX(R) (Nicotine Conjugate Vaccine), the company’s novel, innovative and proprietary investigational vaccine being developed to treat nicotine addiction and prevent smoking relapse. Enrollment for the trial was completed three months earlier than anticipated, paving the way for the release of trial results early in the second quarter of 2007.
