An outbreak of bird flu on a farm run by Europe’s biggest turkey manufacturer Bernard Matthews has killed 2500 birds.
Tests have confirmed that the avian flu which killed 2,600 turkeys at a Suffolk farm is the H5N1 virus, confirmed by the European Commission in UK.
According to the UK Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, there were 160,000 other turkeys on the farm, and they will be slaughtered. Vets were called to the Bernard Matthews farm in Holton late on Thursday night. A three-kilometre protection zone and a 10km surveillance zone will now be set up.
Suffolk County Council have set up a bird flu helpline on 08456 032 814.
