Bird Flu :: 12 year Indonesian boy dies of bird flu

A 12-year-old Indonesian boy from Tangerang District in Banten Province has died of bird flu, an Indonesian health ministry official said.

The Ministry of Health of Indonesia had announced earlier a case of human infection of H5N1 avian influenza. A 12-year-old male from Tangerang District in Banten Province developed symptoms on 30_September. The investigation team found that he had direct contact with dead chicken near his school in the days before his illness.

Results of two tests on blood and saliva samples taken from the boy on Thursday showed he was infected by the deadly H5N1 strain, making him Indonesia’s 109th confirmed human bird flu infection case.

Of the 109 cases confirmed to date in Indonesia, 88 have been fatal.
