Gene :: Researchers discover gene essencial to cerebellum formation

A study published this week in the scientific journal PNAS provides new information on the origin of different cells in the cerebellum, an important component of the central nervous system found in all vertebrates, including humans, and the part of the brain that controls movement.

Ovarian Cancer :: Ovarian cancer may mimic fallopian tube formation

A new study suggests that ovarian cancer cells form by hijacking a developmental genetic process normally used to form fallopian tubes. Scientists at the Georgia Institute of Technology and the Ovarian Cancer Institute discovered that the protein, PAX8, is involved in the development of fallopian tubes and is present in ovarian cancer cells, but not in normal ovarian tissue.

Insulin :: Insulin dose errors can result when blood glucose meters are miscoded

When persons with diabetes use miscoded blood glucose meters to determine how much insulin to take, significant errors in insulin dose can result that may potentially lead to short- and long-term health complications, according to findings of a new study just published in the Journal of Diabetes Science and Technology.

Osteoporosis :: Protein regulates bone mass loss, the cause of osteoporosis

An estimated ten million Americans suffer from osteoporosis, and another 34 million Americans are at risk of developing the disease, which is characterized by a severe loss of bone mineral density, fragile bones and an increased risk of hip, spine and wrist fractures. The basic mechanism behind osteoporosis involves an imbalance between bone mineral formation and loss, but the detailed biological processes that lead to this imbalance are not completely understood.

Pregnancy :: Deakin University researcher unveils pregnancy mystery

A Deakin University study has unlocked one of the many mysteries of pregnancy — how the trace element copper is transported across the placenta. The findings provide a lead to the possible cause, treatment and prevention of a number of potentially fatal conditions.
