Fracture :: Hip fractures not caused by benzodiazepine use

Benzodiazepine use was not shown to be associated with hip fractures after all, according to a new study from the Department of Ambulatory Care and Prevention (of Harvard Medical School and Harvard Pilgrim Health Care). Previous epidemiological studies suggesting an association have been used to support legislation and policy decisions that limit access to these drugs among the elderly. These policies may need to be reexamined based on these new findings, which are being published in the Jan. 16 Annals of Internal Medicine.

Gene :: Genes and sleep, early risers and FASPS

In a latest research, Dr. Louis J. Ptacek and his group has determined how the gene causes the condition known as familial advanced sleep phase syndrome (FASPS), by transplanting the gene into mice to create rodents with FASPS.

SIDS :: Pacifier use assists in reducing the incidence of SIDS

Pacifier use often attracts negative attention for potentially harming children’s oral health. There are positive effects of pacifier use, however. In addition to calming the infant, pacifier use can also assist in reducing the incidence of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or SIDS, according to a report/study that appeared in the January/February 2007 issue of General Dentistry, the Academy of General Dentistry’s clinical, peer-reviewed journal.

Insomnia :: Doctors neglect insomnia in older patients

The sleep problems of older people are often not addressed by their doctors, even though treatment of those sleep disorders could improve their physical and mental health and enhance their quality of life. A new study from Northwestern University found when patients 60 years and older visited their doctors, physicians did not note sleep problems in the patients’ charts. This was significant because many of those patients suffered from insomnia and were not being treated.
