Stem Cell :: Mice cloned from skin cells

Healthy and viable mice that survive until adulthood have, for the first time, been cloned from adult stem cells. Scientists from Rockefeller University, including Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator Elaine Fuchs, used cells called keratinocyte stem cells, which represent a new model system for cloning. Keratinocytes come from the skin, making them a particularly attractive stem cell source because of their ready accessibility.

Burn :: Burn Awareness – Forty-Three Percent of All Burns Happen at Home

It is estimated that more than one million burn injuries occur every year and of that, 50 percent could be avoided. Burn Awareness Week, observed the first full week in February each year, is an opportunity to remind parents and children about potential hazards that can lead to burns in the home.

Vitamin D :: Vitamin D3 provides the skin with protection from harmful microbes

A new study to be published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation shows that wounding of the skin of humans triggers the production (by skin cells known as keratinocytes) of the active form of vitamin D3, which, in turn, induces an immune response that includes the production of antimicrobial peptides, such as cathelicidin, and the upregulation of receptors that recognize microbial components, such as TR2 and CD14.
