Medicare :: Seven Medicare PFFS plans are approved following rigorous marketing review
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced today that, after being found compliant with Medicare requirements through a comprehensive marketing review, seven health plan sponsors may resume marketing their Private-Fee-For-Service (PFFS) plans. The approvals allow the sponsors, as well as all other Medicare Advantage organizations, to market to newly eligible Medicare beneficiaries through October 1, 2007. The plans may also market to those beneficiaries with special enrollment periods.
Colorectal Tumor :: Patients with coronary artery disease appear to have increased prevalence of colorectal tumors
Patients in Hong Kong who were newly diagnosed with coronary artery disease had nearly twice the prevalence of colorectal tumors and cancers, with this association stronger in persons who had smoked or have the metabolic syndrome, according to a study in the Sept. 26 issue of JAMA.
Drinking :: Binge drinking appears to be on the rise in Mediterranean countries
Binge drinking has traditionally been more common in Anglo-Saxon and northern European countries, known as “dry drinking cultures,” than it has been in Mediterranean countries. However, a study of drinking among adults in the Madrid region of Spain indicates that binge drinking is on the rise.
HIV Vaccine :: GeoVax comments on Merck’s HIV vaccine trial
Merck & Co., Inc. announced their candidate AIDS vaccine failed to provide protection in a human study designed to test for efficacy. In this Merck trial involving high risk volunteers, an equal number of people received either placebo or AIDS vaccine. The independent Data Safety Monitoring Board recommended that the trial be stopped because it was not reaching its efficacy endpoints.

In the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease, people experience mild memory loss and confusion. These challenges are significant, but people often maintain much of their normal capability and spirit. Now, a specialized support group program is being formed at the UCSF Memory and Aging Center to help patients learn how to live with the disease and to help family members grieve and adjust.
