Asthma :: Intervention program reduces asthma in children

An asthma intervention program applied during the first year of life significantly reduced the prevalence of asthma in high risk children at 7 years of age, according to a new study featured on the online version of the Journal of Allergy & Clinical Immunology (JACI). The JACI is the peer-reviewed journal of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI).

Whooping Cough :: Vaccine to protect adolescents from whooping cough

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first combination vaccine that provides a booster immunization against pertussis (whooping cough) in combination with tetanus and diphtheria for adolescents. The vaccine will be marketed as Boostrix by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) in Philadelphia, Pa.

Respiratory :: Excess oxygen worsens lung inflammation

Research performed at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health, has revealed that oxygen therapy aimed at helping mice with acute lung inflammation breathe paradoxically worsened their illness. The researchers say excess oxygen appears to thwart a natural process that limits lung tissue damage. They overcame this deleterious side effect, however, by adding an inhaled anti-inflammatory drug to the oxygen therapy.

Neuropathy :: Guillain Barre Syndrome (GBS) and Homeopathy

Guillian Barre syndrome (GBS) is the commonest acute polyneuropathy. GBS is an acute, frequently severe, and fulminant polyradiculoneuropathy that is autoimmune in nature. It occurs year-round at a rate of about one case per million per month .It develops 1- 4 weeks after viral infection in 70% patients and more rarely follows surgery or immunisation. Pathologically there is demyelination of spinal roots or peripheral nerves which is certainly immunologically mediated.

Health :: Continuum of care – approach for mother and child

Hundreds of millions of women and children have no access to potentially life-saving care with often fatal results, the World Health Organization (WHO) says in a report published. The report says the resulting death toll could be sharply reduced through wider use of key interventions and a “continuum of care” approach for mother and child that begins before pregnancy and extends through childbirth and into the baby’s childhood.

Aging :: Homoeopathy & geriatrics, old age

Gerontology is the study of old age, stressing the social and behavioral looks of aging. Although aging is a lifelong process and changes in its effects on individual people, old age has been generally stated as beginning at the age of 65.

Asthma :: Vitamin C in pregnancy and child’s asthma

While women who take vitamin E during pregnancy seem to lower their offspring’s risk of asthma in early childhood, intake of vitamin C may actually raise the risk, according to a recent study by Scottish researchers.
