Medicare :: Pelosi Statement on Social Security and Medicare Trustees Reports

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement on the 2007 reports of the Board of Trustees of the Social Security and Medicare Trust Funds:

“The report reinforces one basic reality — in its current form, Social Security will be able to pay full benefits until 2041 and even after that will be able to pay 75 percent of benefits.

“Common-sense measures, such as reducing subsidies to HMOs, could finance a large reduction in the number of uninsured children, improve the solvency of the Medicare program and help meet the unwise 45 percent standard set in law.

“Now that the American people have rejected Republicans’ risky Social Security privatization plan, I hope that both parties can work together to strengthen Social Security and Medicare, so that seniors, survivors and individuals with disabilities will receive the guaranteed benefits they have earned.”
