NASA :: NASA diagnoses Tropical Storm Gert’s growth spurt

Scientists present findings from a 2005 field campaign during which they flew over Tropical Storm Gert to look at the storm inside and out to determine how Gert evolved. Presentation (poster A13A-0882) at the American Geophysical U nion meeting, at 4:40 p.m. EST, Dec. 11.

Myeloma :: Bank on a Cure researchers identify pathways mediating myeloma treatment side effects

Thalidomide is a widely prescribed treatment for multiple myeloma. However, an estimated 15 to 30 percent of patients suffer venous thromboembolisms (VTEs), blood clots, as a major complication. The Bank On A Cure DNA-bank researchers have identified four gene clusters associated with the VTEs. Identifying the associated single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) for use as markers, may lead to the development of screenings and tailored interventions to prevent these side effects, as a major step toward personalized medicine.

DNA :: Regulating the nuclear architecture of the cell

Researchers at the Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory have discovered two molecular pathways that regulate the organization of heterochromatin, the nucleolus, and other features of nuclear architecture that maintain genome stability in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster.

Finding an answer to Darwin’s Dilemma

The sudden appearance of large animal fossils more than 500 million years ago — a problem that perplexed even Charles Darwin and is commonly known as “Darwin’s Dilemma” — may be due to a huge increase of oxygen in the world’s oceans, says Queen’s paleontologist Guy Narbonne, an expert in the early evolution of animals and their ecosystems.

NASA :: NASA images, White Sands features support a wetter Mars

NASA’s announcement yesterday of evidence that water still flows on Mars, at least in brief spurts, demonstrates that the view of Mars as a very dry planet should be re-evaluated, says Dawn Sumner, professor of geology at UC Davis. Recent work from by Sumner and graduate student Greg Chavdarian also supports the presence of liquid water near the surface.
