Diabetes :: Whey supplement helpful for diabetics
Dr. Mikael Nilsson, of Lund University, Sweden, and team, studied the effect of whey protein on diabetic subjects consuming high glycemic index (GI) meals, which cause blood sugar levels to spike.

Low-carbohydrate diets or low carb diets, are food diet programs for weight loss and dietary health that advocate restricted carbohydrate consumption, based on research that ties carbohydrate consumption with increased blood insulin levels, and increased insulin with obesity.
Several lines of recent scientific evidence have shown that individuals that followed a low GI diet over many years were at a significantly lower risk for developing both type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease.
Recent animal research provides compelling evidence that high GI carbohydrate is associated with increased risk of obesity. In human trials it is typically difficult to separate the effect from GI and other potentially confounding factors such as fibre content, palatability and compliance.
The Glycemic Index (also glycaemic index, GI) is a ranking system for carbohydrates based on their immediate effect on blood glucose levels. It compares carbohydrates gram for gram in individual foods, providing a numerical, evidence-based index of postprandial (post-meal) glycemia. The concept was invented by Dr. David J. Jenkins and colleagues in 1981 at the University of Toronto.
The Atkins represents a radical departure from prevailing theories. He claimed there are two main unrecognised factors about Western eating habits, arguing firstly that the main cause of obesity is eating refined carbohydrates particularly sugar, flour, and high-fructose corn syrups; and secondly that saturated fat is overrated as a nutritional problem, only trans fats from sources such as hydrogenated oils need to be avoided. Consequently, Dr. Atkins rejects the advice of the food pyramid, instead telling us the tremendous increase in refined carbohydrates is responsible for the rise in metabolic disorders of the 20th century, and the focus on the detrimental effects of dietary fat has actually contributed to the obesity problem by increasing the proportion of insulin inducing foods in the diet.
Inhaled insulin is effective therapy for patients with type 2 diabetes who fail to obtain adequate blood sugar control with diet and exercise, according to a report in the journal Diabetes Care.
Waist circumference is associated with insulin resistance in children and may offer a simple way to identify children with risk factors for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, according to a study in the August issue of the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.
New research indicates development of insulin resistance increases a person’s risk for development of congestive heart failure, according to a study in the July 20 issue of JAMA.
Until recently, apart from those affected with the condition, few people had heard of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). This is remarkable, given that it is the most common female hormonal disorder – affecting at least three to four million women in the UK.
