Clinical Research :: New technology makes clinical research more precise

VIB and AlgoNomics have joined forces to develop a technology that verifies whether certain proteins induce an immune response in humans. The collaboration between VIB and AlgoNomics has yielded a biological test that supplements the current computer simulations. The additional data enable a more precise determination of the immune response.

Myeloma :: Bank on a Cure researchers identify pathways mediating myeloma treatment side effects

Thalidomide is a widely prescribed treatment for multiple myeloma. However, an estimated 15 to 30 percent of patients suffer venous thromboembolisms (VTEs), blood clots, as a major complication. The Bank On A Cure DNA-bank researchers have identified four gene clusters associated with the VTEs. Identifying the associated single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) for use as markers, may lead to the development of screenings and tailored interventions to prevent these side effects, as a major step toward personalized medicine.

Transplant :: Preventing graft-versus-host disease after bone marrow transplant

Most patients undergoing bone-marrow transplant must receive powerful chemotherapy drugs to suppress their immune system and prevent their bodies from rejecting the donated cells. New research shows that this chemotherapy increases the risk for graft-versus-host disease — but also suggests that this risk can be reduced by replacing a natural antibiotic that’s depleted when patients undergo chemotherapy. A multicenter study led by Children’s Hospital Boston and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is about to test this idea.

Leukemia :: New tools to fight leukemia – chronic lymphocytic leukemia CLL

Mayo Clinic Cancer Center, working in collaboration with Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center, presented evidence Sunday that a novel regimen of three chemotherapy drugs, pentostatin, cyclophosphamide and rituximab, resulted in significant clinical response in patients with previously untreated chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL).
