NIST test fans the flames for high-rise fire safety

Reseearchers from NIST, the Chicago Fire Department and the Chicago Housing Authority recently set controlled fires in an abandoned Chicago apartment building to test a new fire-fighting technique — using powerful fans to force smoke and heat from corridors and stairwells so that they stay passable and safe for both escaping occupants and firefighters.

Vital force is the hero in homeopathy

The father of homoeopathy Christian Friedrich Samuel Hahnemann reverently known as Hahnemann in the homoeopathic world was the fist physician who introduced the importance of VITAL FORCE in the field of medicine. He defines it in Aphorism No. 9 of his book ?Organon of Medicine? in the following words:

Climate :: Innovative climate protection strategies – Bayer

The Bayer Group has long assigned climate protection top priority and is continuing its activities to improve its greenhouse gas performance. The company welcomes the goal of current government negotiations in Nairobi to achieve a successful global climate protection policy once the commitment period defined in the Kyoto Protocol has come to its conclusion in 2012.

Diet :: UGA professor finds that confusion about Calories is nothing new

James L. Hargrove, associate professor of foods and nutrition in the University of Georgia, said many nutritionists aren’t even sure of the true origin of the Calorie — or why it’s supposed to be capitalized. His findings are detailed in a study to be published in the December issue of the Journal of Nutrition.

Global strategy for investigating Earth’s geodynamics emerges from international collaboration

Fifty-one researchers, prominent Earth scientists representing 15 countries,* gathered recently in Switzerland to forge a global strategy for advancing understanding of continental rifting and break-up through the use of a new array of multiple drilling platforms provided by the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program. The group’s emerging plan is discussed in an article in the Nov. 14 edition of Eos, a publication of the American Geophysical Union.

The striking deep current reversal in the tropical Pacific Ocean

In two oceanographic surveys conducted in the south-west Pacific Ocean, in October 1999 and April 2000, scientists from this IRD observed a sharp change in direction of equatorial intermediate current between these two dates. Such temporal variability is not new, but in this case its amplitude is strikingly strong. This effect will have to be taken into account if better understanding of ocean/atmosphere exchanges and climate variations is to be achieved.

Sensor networks protect containers, navigate robots

Agent 007 is a mighty versatile fellow, but he would have to take backseat to agents being trained at Washington University in St. Louis. Researchers here are using wireless sensor networks that employ software agents that have been able to navigate a robot through a simulated fire and spot said fire by seeking out heat. Once the agent locates the fire, it clones itself ? try that, James Bond — creating a ring of software around the fire.
