Cholesterol :: Raise Good Cholesterol Levels

Despite the death of Pfizer’s new cholesterol drug, researchers say they are not abandoning their quest to find ways to prevent heart disease by raising levels of “good” cholesterol. Reducing LDL, or “bad” cholesterol, has been the main focus of cardiology in recent years, but boosting its counterpart, HDL, also has a salutary effect.

Stem Cell :: Aldagen’s product to isolate cord blood stem cells

Interim data from a clinical trial using Aldagen’s product, ALDESORT? to isolate stem cells from cord blood was presented at the 48th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Hematology demonstrating improved safety and efficacy when using ALDESORT compared to the COBLT control group. The trial is being conducted by Joanne Kurtzberg, MD, the Duke University physician who pioneered the use of umbilical cord blood as treatment for fatal childhood cancers and genetic diseases.

Cancer :: Revlimid patients live longer and remain transfusion free

Dr. Alan List, from the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute, presented the final results from a pivotal Phase II trial evaluating Revlimid in patients with an incurable blood cancer known as myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) at this year’s American Society of Hematology (ASH) meeting.

Imaging :: SCAI issues recommendations to prevent kidney damage after imaging procedures

The Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI) has released recommendations for the prevention of contrast induced nephropathy (CIN) — potentially fatal kidney damage that can occur when a special dye is injected during certain cardiovascular procedures. The consensus document, the first to be written on this topic, appears in the January 2007 issue of Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions: Journal of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions.

Stem Cell :: Muscle and bone from an ink-jet printer

At the 2006 American Society for Cell Biology conference, scientists present the first research findings of a system that can pattern the formation of multiiple tissues from a single population of adult stem cells.

DNA :: Inheritance outside DNA

At the 2006 American Society for Cell Biology conference, scientists will report an increase in tumor frequency in mice with mutations in a cancer-associated gene, called Apc. This finding may contribute to scientific understanding about the epigenetic changes involved in colon cancer.
