Diabetes :: Exercise helps control type 2 diabetes

Regular exercise among women with type 2 diabetes may not only reduce waist size, but may also reduce the amount of visceral fat surrounding organs in the abdomen — the type of fat known to be associated with insulin resistance, a study shows.

Depression :: Depression may up risk of dementia in men

Men with a history of depression long before the onset of any memory or other cognitive problems have a substantially higher risk of developing dementia, especially Alzheimer’s disease (AD), later in life, a study indicates. This risk is not observed in women.

Breast cancer :: Preventive mastectomy removes breast cancer risk

A new study provides more evidence that women who are at increased risk of developing breast cancer can significantly reduce their risk by having both breasts removed, a procedure known as bilateral prophylactic mastectomy. The risk reduction in the current study was about 95 percent.

Diabetes :: New drug to treat type 1 and type 2 diabetes

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Symlin, an injectable medicine to control blood sugar for adults with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Symlin is to be used in addition to insulin therapy in patients who cannot achieve adequate control of their blood sugars on intensive insulin therapy alone.

Brain cancer :: Temodar – temozolomide approved for glioblastoma multiforme

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted approval of a new indication for Temodar (temozolomide). The drug, used concurrently with radiotherapy and as maintenance therapy after radiotherapy, can extend the lives of adult patients newly diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), the most common form of malignant brain cancer.

Osteoporosis :: Keeping bones healthy and strong – osteoporosis in women

Osteoporosis is much more common in women than in men. This is because women have less bone mass than men, tend to live longer and take in less calcium, and need the female hormone estrogen to keep their bones strong. If men live long enough, they are also at risk of getting osteoporosis later in life.
