Dental Health :: Watch your mouth – oral health care

More than 51 million school hours are lost each year due to dental-related illnesses. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) say that dental caries are the most common chronic disease of children aged 5 to 17. While younger children attend appointments with their parents, teens take more control over their free time and may not spend time for dental check-ups.

HIV :: Early therapy slows HIV progression in babies

Very early treatment of babies infected with HIV — before age 3 months — is associated with better outcomes than when treatment is delayed, investigators report in this week’s Journal of the American Medical Association.

Baby Care :: Jaundice in the new born baby

Do not be alarmed if the whites of your baby’s eyes and their skin turns a slight yellow colour after 3 days. This is a condition called jaundice and is caused because your baby’s liver cannot work fast enough to dispose of a pigment called bilirubin. Premature babies are more likely to suffer from jaundice. Newborn jaundice is caused by high levels of bilirubin in the blood, which gives an infant’s skin and eyeballs a yellowish tinge.

Keloids :: Piercing ears early lowers risk of keloids

Ear piercing is seen by many young girls — and some boys — as a rite of passage, an outward sign that they’re starting to grow up. So, they beg for their parents’ permission, but they’re often told to wait until they’re teenagers. Now, a small study in the May issue of Pediatrics may help them convince their parents that sooner is better than later.

Dental Health :: Aloe vera – natural, home remedy treats canker and cold sores

New reports prove that the aloe vera plant, which has been used to heal skin for more than 2,000 years, can also treat many oral health problems including canker sores, cold sores, herpes simplex viruses, lichen planus and gingivitis according to the January/February issue of General Dentistry, the Academy of General Dentistry’s (AGD) clinical, peer-reviewed journal.
