HIV :: New HIV/AIDS vaccine clinical trials

National AIDS Research Institute (NARI), Pune, is conducting a first phase of clinical trial of a newly developed HIV/AIDS vaccine. This ongoing trial is being done under the joint auspices of the National AIDS Control Organization (NACO), the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI).

HIV :: Spy link in Libya’s HIV case – Gaddafi

“Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi expressed his doubts suggesting spy link in HIV case” a Reuters report from Tripoli revealed. Gaddafi defended the court’s decision to sentence five Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor to death for infecting more than 400 children with HIV.

HIV :: HIV patients have increased risk of pneumonia, death following surgery

HIV-infected patients undergoing surgical procedures may be more likely to develop pneumonia after surgery and to die within 12 months than those without HIV, according to a report in the December issue of Archives of Surgery, one of the JAMA/Archives journals. In addition, HIV patients with a preoperative viral load (number of copies of the virus in the blood) greater than 30,000 per milliliter appear to have increased risk of surgical complications.

HIV :: Needle exchange and drug treatment more effective HIV prevention

For injection drug users, the most productive and cost-effective approach to managing the spread of HIV is expanding syringe exchange and drug treatment, as well as promoting antiretroviral treatment for those already infected with HIV, according to a new study by researchers at Yale School of Medicine.

HIV :: Effective HIV control may depend on viral protein targeted by immune cells

An effective response of the immune system’s “killer” T cells against infection with HIV may depend on exactly which viral protein is targeted, according to an international group of researchers. A new study finds that HIV-infected individuals in whom virus-specific CD8 T cells are targeted against the Gag protein have lower viral levels than do those with CD8 responses directed against other viral proteins.

HIV :: Quality not quantity important for immune response to HIV

When it comes to an immune response against HIV, research funded by the Wellcome Trust in the UK and the National Institutes of Health in the US has found that bigger is not necessarily better, contrary to conventional medical wisdom. The research may have a profound impact on the development of a vaccine against the disease.
