Cancer :: Prenatal vitamins can cut cancer risk in kids

Researchers at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) have found that taking prenatal multivitamins fortified with folic acid can reduce the risk of three common childhood cancers: leukemia, brain tumours and neuroblastoma. This research was published online on February 21, 2007, in the journal Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics.

Breast Cancer :: A black and white look at breast cancer mortality

Researchers suggest a reason for racial disparity in breast cancer survival rates. African and African American women are much less likely to survive breast cancer surgery than their white counterparts and far more likely to get the disease before the menopause. Previous research suggests that those who undergo surgery for the disease before the menopause are more prone to relapse.

Breast Cancer :: Tamoxifen yields long-term reduction in breast cancer risk

Tamoxifen offers long-term benefits for breast cancer prevention among women at high risk of the disease, according to two randomized, blinded clinical trials in the February 21 Journal of the National Cancer Institute. The trials found that the breast cancer risk reduction persists long after women stop taking tamoxifen.

Cancer :: Cancer cells more likely to genetically mutate

When cells become cancerous, they also become 100 times more likely to genetically mutate than regular cells, researchers have found. The findings may explain why cells in a tumor have so many genetic mutations, but could also be bad news for cancer treatments that target a particular gene controlling cancer malignancy.
