The survival of lung cancer patients increases by up to 92% of cases, within ten years of being diagnosed, when annual preventative low-dose radiation CAT screening is carried out. This is the conclusion of the International Early Lung Cancer Action Programme (IELCAP) in which the only Spanish-based centres taking part were the University Hospital and the Centre for Research into Applied Medicine (CIMA), both part of the University of Navarre.

Smokers will soon be confronted with a new set of graphic warnings on their cigarette packets, with seven gruesome pictures to be added to those already on display. From today, tobacco manufacturers can introduce a second set of seven images on cigarette packs, and all cigarette packs must be printed with this second set by 1 March 2007.

This international trial, expected to be the largest ever to be conducted in SCLC(1), will assess the potential clinical benefit of pemetrexed in combination with carboplatin, a commonly-used chemotherapeutic agent, in direct comparison to the current leading treatment option of etoposide in combination with carboplatin.

Scientists at Johns Hopkins have discovered how taking the brakes off a ?detox? gene causes chemotherapy resistance in a common form of lung cancer. Products made by a gene called NRF2 normally protect cells from environmental pollutants like cigarette smoke and diesel exhaust by absorbing the materials and pumping them out of the cell. Another gene called KEAP1 encodes products that stop this cleansing process. But lung cancer cells sabotage the expression of these same genes to block assault from chemotherapy drugs.
