Despite two cases of genetic mutation in bird flu in Egypt that moderately reduced the effectiveness of oseltamivir, the most strongly recommended drug, the United Nations health agency is not changing its recommendation because the level of resistance is not yet well established and the virus has not become more easily transmissible between humans.
Viruses with a genetic mutation, linked in laboratory testing to moderately reduced susceptibility to oseltamivir, have been discovered in two persons previously reported with H5N1 infections in Egypt. Both patients had been on treatment with oseltamivir for two days before the clinical samples that yielded the viruses were taken.
Preliminary testing of two dead birds collected in Kowloon has indicated suspected cases of H5 avian influenza, a spokesman for the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) said today (January 18), adding that further confirmatory tests are being conducted.

Japanese officials confirmed that bird flu caused the deaths of more than two-thousand chickens at a farm 900 kilometers southwest of Tokyo. The officials have not determined whether this particular strain of bird flu is the feared H5N1 or another less deadly form.

Vietnam government reported that H5N1 bird flu is spreading and spread of avian bird flu virus has reached to Vietnam’s largest urban area of Ho Chi Minh City. 20 chickens were found dead on a farm in Vinh Long province confirmed the presence of the virus.
Chinese and American scientists have developed a new H5N1 vaccine virus for researchers and companies that want to develop or produce the H5N1 bird flu vaccine for human use, a senior Chinese health official has announced.
