Health :: Health Industry to benefit from new training package

The Federal Minister for Vocational and Further Education, the Hon Andrew Robb AO MP, today launched the new Health Industry Training Package in another step towards providing the health industry with skilled workers.

The Package, developed by the Community Services and Health Industry Skills Council, is the culmination of two years of intensive engagement and consultation with health and community services industry and professionals.

?The health industry is particularly affected by the ageing, and inevitable ailing, of the Australian population and this new training package will assist industry to combat the associated challenges,? Mr Robb said.

Mr Robb said the package included nationally-recognised qualifications for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workers.

?The Australian Government recognises the need to support the important work done by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workers. They will now be able to have their skills and knowledge recognised at a national level,? Mr Robb said.

The Training Package is an excellent example of the whole of government approach to ensuring an optimal training system. The Australian Government?s Office of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health provided funding of over $1.1 million complementing the core funding of the industry skills councils provided through the Department of Education Science and Training.

The new package means a consistent framework for community services and health sector workers nationally, and recognition of their qualifications in each state and territory.

?The Community Services and Health Industry Skills Council has established a major breakthrough in the national health workforce agenda by the inclusion of enrolled nurses in the Health Training Package for the first time.?
