Health :: Health and well being are closely linked to the state of environmental resources

Delivering the keynote address on the theme ?Ecology and Health? at the inaugural function of the 13th Annual General Body Meeting and Continuing Medical Education Programme of the Sister Doctors Forum of India in New Delhi, the U nion Minister for Health & Family Welfare, Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss stated that involvement of the professionals to supplement the Government?s efforts in the health care delivery system is the need of the hour.

Appreciating the work done by the members of the Sister Doctors Forum, the Indian Minister said they must play a leading role in taking the health care facilities to the people in the rural areas and North-Eastern regions.

He said that the well being of humanity and all life depends on a healthy environment and the balance of local and global ecological systems that support and sustain life. Human activity has created an imbalance in these ecosystems, and we are using up vital resources faster than nature can replace them.

The Minister said that the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), which is in the second year of its implementation, seeks to provide effective health care to all the people in the country with special focus on rural population. Recognizing the importance of this Mission, the Budget allocation has been increased from Rs. 8207 crore in 2006-07 to Rs. 9947 crore in 2007-08.
