Ecology :: Soil nutrition affects carbon sequestration in forests

On December 11, USDA Forest Service (FS) scientists from the FS Southern Research Station (SRS) unit in Research Triangle Park, NC, along with colleagues from Duke University, published two papers in The Proceedings of the National Academy of Science (PNAS) that provide a more precise understanding of how forests respond to increasing atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2), the major greenhouse gas driving climate change.

Breast Cancer :: Tykerb, lapatinib – novel breast cancer drug

A clinical trial of a new targeted breast cancer drug, led by physicians at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Cancer Center, has begun enrolling patients. The TEACH (Tykerb Evaluation After CHemotherapy) trial will investigate the experimental drug Tykerb (lapatinib) in patients with early-stage, HER2-positive breast cancer who have not been treated with Herceptin, another targeted drug used for the same type of tumor.

Aneurysm :: Smoking speeds aneurysm growth

Studies show that smoking speeds aneurysm growth by 20 to 25 percent a year. The faster an aneurysm grows, the greater the risk of a life-threatening rupture. An aneurysm is an abnormal blood-filled bulge of a blood vessel and especially an artery resulting from weakening of the vessel wall.

Breast Cancer :: Restoring Tamoxifen Sensitivity in Resistant Breast Cancer

The widely used breast cancer drug tamoxifen (Nolvadex?), which can become less effective over time, might retain its full strength indefinitely if used along with a second drug, according to new research in mice conducted by investigators from the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health, and their partners. The results appear in the December 11, 2006, issue of Cancer Cell.

Purpura :: Eltrombopag decreased bleeding episodes and improved platelet counts in idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) today announced additional results from an international Phase II short-term, six-week study of its investigational non-peptide oral platelet growth factor, eltrombopag. Analysis of data from this study showed that eltrombopag at 50mg or 75mg, resulted in a positive trend in decrease in bleeding incidence (all grades) in adult patients with chronic idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), an autoimmune condition which results in low blood platelet counts and bleeding from the small blood vessels. These data were presented today at the 48th Annual American Society of Hematology (ASH) meeting in Orlando, Florida.

Lymphoma :: Novel gallium compound offers treatment for lymphoma patients with resistant disease

Christopher Chitambar, M.D., a physician researcher at the Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Center in Milwaukee, has identified a compound that may be effective in treating forms of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (a cancer of the lymphatic system) that are resistant to certain therapies. The new agent could also offer the advantages of being administered orally, rather than intravenously, making it more convenient than intravenous agents.
