Researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s High Temperature Materials Laboratory are helping diesel engine and parts manufacturers develop technologies to meet tough new emissions regulations that go into effect in 2007.

Surgery :: Advanced technology to revolutionize surgical care

A new Surgical Simulation and Technology Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center, one of only a few hospital-based centers of its kind in the United States, will open on December 6, 2006. The center brings together a diverse group of experts to solve important challenges in surgery, such as how to improve and expand minimally invasive surgical procedures that enhance patient care, how to advance the design of surgical instruments and how to redesign operating rooms to prevent surgeons from suffering from shoulder and neck injuries.

Leukemia :: New hope for patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia

Patients treated with lenalidomide for relapsed chronic lymphocytic leukemia or disease that no longer responds to chemotherapy have experienced a major response to therapy, according to a phase II study conducted by Asher Chanan-Khan, M.D., Department of Medicine, Roswell Park Cancer Institute. The results are published in the December 1 issue of the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

Pancreatic Cancer :: OHSU surgeon gives patients with lethal cancer reason to hope

Researchers in the OHSU Digestive Health Center are developing a system through which clinicians hope to more easily identify people at increased risk for the disease. Early identification allows physicians to identify malignancies sooner and begin aggressive treatment quicker. Only patients at high risk for pancreatic cancer will be monitored.

Exercise :: Low impact aerobic exercise reduces fatigue in auto-immune conditions

People with auto-immune conditions like MS, arthritis and lupus can benefit from low impact aerobic exercise — including walking and cycling — that increases in intensity, duration and frequency. A review of studies between 1987 and 2006 shows that 12-week programmes that involved exercising for 30 to 60 minutes, three times a week, yielded the most effective results.

Fibromyalgia :: Pain from fibromyalgia is real

Many people with fibromyalgia — a debilitating pain syndrome that affects 2 to 4 percent of the population — have faced the question of whether the condition is real.Increasingly, though, the scientific knowledge about fibromyalgia is growing, and a new paper from the University of Michigan Health System says there are “overwhelming data” that the condition is real.

Homeopathy :: 60 percent of doctors’ surgeries prescribe homeopathic or herbal remedies

60 percent of Scottish doctors’ surgeries prescribe homeopathic remedies according to a study of nearly two million patients. Homeopathic prescribing is most prevalent among babies under 12 months and older people aged 81-90. The authors have called for a critical review of prescribing. The paper is published as leading UK scientific institutions voice concerns about changes to homeopathic labelling rules that came in in September 2006.
